Located right across the border from Southern California's San Diego is the city of Tijuana. Tijuana has been a popular destination for young and old wanting to visit Mexico for a day trip, weekend, extended weekend, or even a full vacation. The city has developed a reputation as a location where anyone can find something to do that will interest them. A great deal is known about this tourist mecca located so close to America, but here are five things you may not know about Tijuana, Mexico. 1. The Tijuana River stretches for more than 120 miles, but often sits empty because of the dry arid climate around it. All but the last five miles flows through Mexico, the river then crosses the border and passes through the extreme Southwestern United States before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. 2. One of the most popular attractions in the city of Tijuana is Agua Caliente Racetrack. Currently featuring greyhound racing, the track gained its fame as a horse racing track. It was designed by Southern California based architect Wayne McAllister who is also famous for designing several other notable structures like the the Desert Inn (1950), Sands Hotel (1952), and Fremont Hotel & Casino (1956) in Las Vegas, Nevada. 3. Tijuana is the birthplace of one of the most famous salads in the world, the Caesar Salad. There are a number of stories on how it came to be first created, but it is most often credited to chef Cesare Cardini. 4. Tijuana's airport, General Abelardo L. Rodriguez International Airport, is named for a popular statesman in Mexico's past. Rodriguez served in a number of political offices, rising to be President of Mexico after the previous president, Pascual Ortiz, had resigned. He only served as his country's leader for a little more than two years. In his early days he had been a professional baseball player. 5. Three American cities are known as official sister cities of Tijuana. Two of those are found in the state of California, one is right across the Mexican-American border, San Diego, and the other is a little farther north, Chula Vista. The third American sister city of Tijuana is the community of Caldwell, found in Idaho. Many people, especially from the younger crowd, head to Tijuana each and every year to experience this Mexican community that shares much more than a border with the United States. The city has catered to travelers coming across the border for decades and many attractions and features in the city are aimed right at these tourists. Tijuana is home to a number recreational opportunities, as well as spectator sports, shopping, authentic Mexican cuisine, and a vibrant nightlife.
