Five Things You May Not Know About Five Western Montana Communities Montana is a true land of wonder, and is the perfect destination for anyone who would like to experience an area of the United States that doesn't get a great deal of attention. Western Montana in particular offers a great deal of things to do for the traveler, many of them associated with the great outdoors. The region has the unique ability to provide a wide variety of entertainment and recreational activities that will appeal to almost any vacationer, no matter what their interests or background are. While visiting Western Montana is a great way to spend a vacation, not a lot is known about the area. Here is a look at five things you may not know about five Western Montana communities. 1. Kalispell For a brief time during his youth, the future founder of the Church of Scientology L. Ron Hubbard, called Kalispell home. 2. Butte Butte's airport, the Bert Mooney Airport, was named after early aviator Bert Mooney in 1972. Mooney was from Butte and was the first pilot to fly the United States Mail into the always popular tourist destination, Yellowstone National Park. 3. Whitefish Whitefish is home to Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort, known previously as the Big Mountain Resort, opened in December of 1947 and just two years later in 1949 played host to the United States Alpine Championships. 4. Hamilton Hamilton is home to scientist Willy Burgdorfer who in the early 1980s discovered the cause of Lyme disease. 5. Missoula Carroll O'Connor, later to become famous playing television's Archie Bunker, was once a student at the University of Montana in Missoula. After the administration confiscated an issue of the school newspaper because it depicted a cartoon it didn't approve of, he resigned his editor position in protest. A visit to Western Montana provides a traveler with several opportunities to create once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The state is home to an incredible amount of outdoor recreational possibilities with plenty of choices for any traveler interested in hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, swimming, boating, water skiing, snow skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding, jet skiing, camping, and more. A vacation to Western Montana can be a truly special time in the life of anyone with an affection for the outdoors.
